We asked Makita’s Colin Woolmer to run through a demo of the features of the Makita MLT100 table saw. Colin is ideally placed to talk with authority about this saw as he owns one! During our trip to Makita last month he talked enthusiastically about the saw and the purposes he’s put it to. All of our videos are available via iTunes. Get the m4v or ogv versions of this video.
Features:
Two pole slide system for raising and lowering blade for the most efficient and smoothest adjustment of the blade depth
Aluminium die cast, precision machined table top remains flat and true for out of the box accuracy
Powerful motor delivers 4,500rpm and electric brake for maximum productivity
Large cutting capacity (91mm at 90° and 63mm at 45°)
Sometimes we need specialist tools for those jobs that require something extra special, particularly if you’re working in tight or confined spaces where access to your work area is heavily restricted. That’s where an angle drill is vital, and Neil demonstrates the features and benefits of the Makita BDA350RFE LXT lithium-ion angel drill. Download the m4v and ogv versions of this video. All of our videos are available via iTunes.
Another great Makita product, with tons of features to make your job easier. It’s the Makita 4351FCT Orbital Action Jigsaw with tool-less blade fixing and job light. One of the major features of this jigsaw that may not be apparent immediately is the handle. Rather than a ‘D’ type of handle, the 4351FCT has a bar-type handle. Watch the video to find out how and why this will benefit you, plus you’ll see the jigsaw in action.
Replacing the brushes is an essential repare that will keep your power tool working efficiently and will ultimately extend its working life. In this video, Derek Wenham shows us how to replace the brushes in a Makita corded percussion drill.
We thought that screws were screws; you drive them into your substrate and they fix things in place. That’s before we met Michael Wilkinson, the inventor of the Tite-Fix range of screws. We asked him to demonstrate Screw-Tite.
What do you think? Could the Screw-Tite technology (such as the Tri – Lock™ TS Threadform, for example, or the fact that each screw has a single-course thread and a twin thread, etc) revolutionise the way you work? Face it, knowing that each screw you pull out will work efficiently no matter what substrate you’re screwing into and that the screw will act has a powerful clamp is surely a game changer. Also, because the screw goes into the material easier than ‘normal’ screws, notice how little strain is placed on the tool. This means your drill/driver will work longer per charge as it’s using less energy per screw. Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
For more info on the technology within the Tite-Fix range and the problems these screws are designed to solve, listen to the Toolstop Podcast.
As mentioned here, we found a ‘vintage’ Black and Decker rotary hammer drill. This inspired us to talk about the differences between tools like this (from the early 1980s), including the materials they’re made out of, safety features that are built in, including the likes of ‘anti-vibration’ control, something not present on similar spec of tools back then.
Download the podcast. However, what was surprising, as we note on the podcast, is the different – if any – in terms of power output.
We also discuss the various ways you can make sure you don’t miss out on any great power tool deals from Toolstop;
Tongue-Tite is a specialist screw designed for softwood, hardwood and fibre tongue & groove floorboards. With the Tri-LockTM TS threadform the screw will drive straight through the boards and into the substrate without pre-drilling, even in hard woods. We asked its inventor, Michael Wilkinson, to demonstrate how revolutionary this screw is.
Neil demos the Hulk, a plate compactor from Evolution. The beauty of this beast is its affordability; the savings you’d make over renting a plate compressor would pay for the Hulk within around 2 weeks. It’s ideal for all of the tasks you’d need it for in the building and landscape industry, such as crusher run, sand, soil, small aggregates, patio & block paving preparation, driveways and tarmac repairs.
Another product from DeWalt’s new subcompact range, this time it’s the DCL510N-XJ LED flashlight. As before, it uses the new 10.8v lithium-ion batteries from DeWalt. As it comes ‘naked’, you’re going to need to use the battery from on of your existing DeWalt subcompact tools. Lots of features are packed into to this little torch, including a belt clip, metal hanger and metallic strip, allowing you to easily position the torch within your work area. The head of the torch is adjustable horizontally through 180 degrees and vertically via a ratchet system, again through 180 degrees.
It’s an ideal addition to your tool kit, especially if you’ve already invested in DeWalt’s range. Get it today from Toolstop.
On this week’s podcast, we focus on using Bosch power tools, both for professionals and for keen amateurs, plus Neil updates on a trip he’s making later this month to Bosch’s launch event where they’ll unveil their brand new tools.
Spending your hard earned cash on new Bosch power tools isn’t something you’re going to enter into lightly, so for professionals Bosch is giving you the chance to become part of their pro-product testing team. You get the chance to try the tools and then give Bosch your honest feedback. Click here to read reviews and to contact Bosch to get involved.
Keen DIYers may wonder how they can get the most out of their power tools. Oftentimes we have a few jobs around the house that we know we’ll be able to use our tools on. But in order to justify dropping a bit of extra cash on a Bosch power tool, such as their ‘green‘ range, we’ll probably want to make sure we’ve got enough jobs to justify the expense. Bosch have come to the rescue with a great DIY website that gives you some great projects to use your power tools on. Check it out, it’s called “House of Bosch”.
Be sure to let us know what questions you’d like us to ask the DeWalt training team when we visit them next month, either here on the blog, Twitter or Facebook.
Another instructional video, this time showing you how to carry out the essential repair of replacing the brushes in a Makita cordless percussion drill.
Brand new from Makita, Neil shows us the features and benefits of the BUH550RD 36v lithium-ion hedge trimmer. Ideal for awkward cutting jobs, the tools has a 5-point adjustable handle, along with speed control plus an array of safety features, as demonstrated in the video. The tool is balanced with its weight coming in at just over 5kg.
Another hedge trimmer from Makita's new range, this time the UH200DW 10.8v lithium-ion model. Running off the familiar 10.8v Makita lithium-ion battery, this handy little device is ideal for topiary or for simply keeping your bushes neat and tidy. With a 20mm blade offering a cut of up to 8mm running at 1250 spm, the UH200DW weighs just over a kilo and has adjustable cutting height, toolless blade management and soft-grip handle control.
Neil and Mark summarise Chris Elsworthy’s appearance on Dragon’s Den, including the success of the CEL multi-tool. We also feature some of your comments about the DeWalt subcompact range and Mark talks about his experience borrowing the DCD710S2 drill/driver the weekend he moved house. Play the podcast;
They also comment on the DeWalt DC618KB nail gun and how it runs on the same 18v battery as the above pack which means that you not only have power but don’t need to buy gas packs. However, we bring in an expert on nail guns, nail gun product manager for Makita UK, Roger Mayer, along with John Stark. Roger walks us through the range of Makita nail guns, explaining how they work, the nails they use, the benefits of air-powered nail guns along with gas nailers. Plus Roger shares his top tip for buying and using an air compressor.
Finally, the guys lay down their predictions for the English Premiership and Neil gets the chance to win back his tenner.
We want your comments and feedback on the podcast, so please get involved by leaving a comment here on the blog and remember to keep up to date on Twitter and Facebook.
